Built in the Dark

A choreography and performance project exploring darkness, light pollution, and humanity’s relationship to nature

What would re-discovering our relationship to darkness look like?

Appreciating and experiencing natural darkness is becoming rarer, as each year we invest in brighter lights in larger numbers in the name of “safety,” “security,” and “productivity.” Darkness is no longer a part of life that we need to experience, but what is lost if we don’t?

Over the course of a month, Feuerhelm took dancers to various locations around San Francisco at night for observation and exploration, exposing herself and them to the world in darkness, then built dance material based on these experiences. The performance that has resulted from these field trips connects us to states of stress, anxiety, wonder, mysticism, fear, safety, and much more.
